As a child, Frankenthaler used to drip nail polish into a sink full of water to see the colors swirl. Years later, as a successful New York artist, she poured paint onto canvas, developing an entirely new, brush-less, technique. If you look closely, you can see how the paint stains, sinking into the weave of the linen. The artist herself was fascinated by the depth of these canvases. She said: It has to be flat, flat, flat and also move miles into space.
