Arts Overlay and PUD-C

is before the Board of Alderman and Planning Board

Mayor Joseph Curtatone, Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston and Ward 3 Alderman Thomas Taylor has submitted the Union Square Zoning Amendments, which include an Arts Overlay District and a PUD-C.

Since 2005, ArtsUnion—a project shepherded by the Somerville Arts Council in conjunction with the city’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development and numerous other partners—has explored how zoning in Union Square can better support artists and arts organizations; the result is a proposed Arts Overlay District. In addition, the proposed PUD-C is designed to unleash economic development within municipal-owned property.
