2004 WINDOWS ART PROJECT (WAP)

EXHIBITION DATES: Sept. 13 - Oct. 15, 2004
RECEPTION: Saturday, September 18, 3-6pm
(RAIN DATE: Sunday, September 19, 3-6pm)

“play”

This year you have to "play" with the WAP Interactive Map to see all the artists' work.

WAP TOUR & RECEPTION

Come to Union Square Plaza on Saturday, September 18 from 3pm to 6pm (rain date is Sept. 19, same time) for the WAP reception. There will be group art tours, at 3pm and 4:15pm, and lively performance art, including a giant, interactive puzzle of Somerville and living statues playing chess. Three bands will provide a sonic backdrop for this artsy affair: the dreamy, melodic Skating Club hit the stage at 3:30, followed by art rockers 27 at 4:30. At 5:15, the Young, Sexy Assassins, known for loud, strange punk and extreme dressing habits, will bring the event to a cacophonous conclusion.

THE WAP ARTISTS

This year’s WAP artists were selected by a jury comprised of Somerville Arts Council staff, board members and interns. Selected artists include painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed media and installation artists. The WAP 2004 artists are: Christopher Abrams, Leika Akiyama, Muriel Angelil, Emily Arkin, Marjorie Bangs, Yani Batteau, Carrie Bennett, Joel Bennett, Suzanne Bibeau, Kelvy Bird, Jan Corash, James DeLancey, Kathleen Finlay, Lewis Gesner, Jeanne Hillson, Garrett Laws, Pauline Lim, Denise Malis, Chandra Meesig, Hilary Scott, Jeffrey Shumaker, Marcella Anna Stasa, Heather Meri Stewart, V Van Sant and Stephanie Wratten.

WAP guides will be available throughout Union Square. Just look for the funky WAP stands designed by Somerville WAP artist Hilary Scott.

ABOUT WINDOWS ART PROJECT

The Windows Art Project (WAP) is one of the Boston area’s largest public art events. Since 1995, this juried exhibit has infiltrated public and private spaces of Somerville’s Squares. The project ran for many years in Davis Square; beginning in 2003, the Somerville Arts Council moved WAP to Union Square. The theme for 2004 is "Play." WAP artists explore the creative process of "play" as it relates to joy, invention, risk, uncertainty, fantasy and fun. There will be 25 exhibits throughout Union Square, in business windows, outside on traffic islands and in the Union Square plaza. Artist Hilary Scott will exhibit his cuddly, fuzzy toy guns; Jan Corash will showcase her mixed media images of women clad in starburst candy wrapper bikinis; and Marcella Anna Stasa will display her strange, lovely figurines, such as "Rottweiler in Elvis Cape," and "Lady Di" .
